US military beefs up robots with extra muscle

Scientists working with the US military are attempting to add muscle tissue to the skeletons of robots to make them stronger and more agile on the battlefield (Will Pavia writes).

The effort to replicate muscles around the frames and joints of robots is expected to make them better able to adapt to new territory and conquer it.

“Muscle actuation, though certainly not solely responsible for it, is a big contributor to animals’ ability to navigate uneven and unreliable terrain,” said Dean Cutler, a research scientist at the US Army Research Laboratory.
