In case you didn’t notice, Lemmon/McIntosh quarterback Cody Thompson can sling it.

The senior signal caller capped off the regular season with 162 yards and three touchdowns against Bison on Oct. 16. But that doesn’t illustrate how prolific of a season, and career, Thompson has put together in the northwestern corner of the state.

This season, Thompson has had games with 374, 368, 300 and 294 passing yards. He’s had games with seven, six and five touchdown passes this season.

It adds up to 2,111 passing yards and 33 touchdown passes this season. Earlier this season, Thompson became the all-time nine-man record holder in career passing yards (7,357) and career touchdown passes (110). The previous nine-man record was held by Harding County’s Sam Podzimek (6,593).

The 6-foot, 180-pound Thompson is closing in on the state’s all-time passing record. Brandon Valley’s Austin Sumner holds the all-time record with 7,628 passing yards.

Thompson isn’t done yet, either. The Cowboys (8-0) will host Elkton-Lake Benton on Friday in the Class 9AA playoffs as they look to make another postseason run.

Lemmon/McIntosh advanced to last year’s Class 9AA semifinals, falling to eventual state champs Viborg-Hurley (32-26).

If the Cowboys make another deep run, it only gives Thompson more opportunities to sling it.

Zuehlke takes field one last time

Britton-Hecla quarterback Trevor Zuehlke took the field one last time on Oct. 16.

Zuehlke suffered a traumatic brain injury in a football game on Oct. 18, 2019 against Warner. He spent months in the hospital after the injury and was put into a medically induced coma.

This past Friday, Zuehlke was wheeled onto the field and played linebacker against the Monarchs. The Warner sideline took a knee, while the offense took a delay of game penalty.

Zuehlke’s list of accomplishments were rattled off as fans and players applauded the moment.

Britton-Hecla will play Ipswich/Edmunds Central on Thursday in the Class 9A playoffs.

• North Border’s Isaac Sumption erupted for 300 rushing yards on 17 carries and six touchdowns in a 60-36 victory over Hitchcock-Tulare.

• Gregory’s Coy Determan threw for five touchdowns and 300 yards in a 36-29 win over Kimball/White Lake.

• Philip’s Reece Heltzel racked up 220 rushing yards on 31 carries and two touchdowns in a 38-28 win over Lyman.

• Faulkton Area’s Leighton Weber finished with 249 rushing yards and had five touchdowns in a 52-20 win over Potter County.

• Rapid City Christian’s Sam Schlabach passed for 254 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 157 rushing yards and two more scores. Teammate Avery Wipf added 183 receiving yards and three touchdowns in the 56-8 victory over Jones County/White River.

• Parker’s Lane Wieman posted 231 rushing yards on 15 carries and four touchdowns in a 66-12 win over Centerville. Colby Olson added 219 rushing yards and four scores.
