PHOENIX — Four students are being examined by medical officials after they were believed to have taken heart medication pills on a school bus, Phoenix fire said.

On Thursday morning, Phoenix Fire Department officials said crews responded to reports of four elementary school students that took what appeared to be heart medication pills on their morning school bus. The incident occurred near 19th Avenue and Thunderbird Road.

According to Phoenix police, a 6-year-old girl took prescription pills that belonged to a family member from home. Police said while walking to school, the girl gave the medication to four other kids between the ages of 6 – 7 years old.

Police stated that a school staff member became aware of the incident and brought the children to the nurses’ office and called 911.

Officials said all of the students were alert and stable and talking with firefighters. Once parents arrived at the students' school, Phoenix FD said all four sets of parents refused transport by ambulance to the hospital.

The parents wanted to take their children themselves and they all signed refusals, officials added.

The students are all believed to be currently enrolled at Moon Mountain Elementary School.

After the incident, the school issued the following statement:

On October 17, 2019, at approximately 7:30 a.m., it was reported to staff that a student distributed heart medication to four students before school. As a precautionary measure, staff notified the Phoenix Fire Department and brought the children to the health office. After being evaluated by paramedics, students who were involved in the situation were released with their parents/guardians.

Phoenix police will be investigating the incident and said no criminal intent has been identified at this time.
