Big 12 Play Continues with TCU

January 17, 2020 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – The Sooners return to Lloyd Noble Center Sunday to host TCU. The game will tip at 3 p.m. CT as mascot Top Daug makes its return to Oklahoma women's basketball.

ON THE AIR

The contest will be broadcast on Fox Sports Oklahoma with Chris Plank as play-by-play and Jessica Coody as color analyst. In Norman and Oklahoma City, the game will air on KREF 99.3 FM/1400 AM in Norman and KOKC 1520 AM in Oklahoma City (Tune In Radio App) with Brian Brinkley on the call.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

•  The OU women's basketball team returns to Norman Sunday to host TCU. The Sooners will look for their fourth consecutive Big 12 win after upsetting No. 17 West Virginia Wednesday in Morgantown.

•  With a career-high 31 points at West Virginia, sophomore Taylor Robertson extended her record for the program's most consecutive games with 20+ points to eight. Robertson made 10 field goals in the contest and drained eight 3-pointers, just one shy of matching her career high of nine set at Wichita State this season.

• The OU defense was on lock Wednesday night in Morgantown, holding West Virginia to just 23.7% shooting from the floor. That percentage ranks in the Big 12's 10 lowest field goal percentages in a regular-season matchup in conference history. The Sooners held WVU to just one 3-pointer on 13 attempts and allowed no Mountaineers to score in double figures.

•  Head coach Sherri Coale will look for her 500th career victory as the Sooners take on the Horned Frogs. Coale is 499-270 in her 24th year as head coach at OU. Coale was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.

•  Sunday's game will also serve as the return for beloved Oklahoma basketball mascot Top Daug. Introduced as the mascot for Oklahoma basketball in the mid-1980s, Top Daug was known for leading raucous crowds and performing zany antics. Top Daug experienced OU's run to the 2002 Final Four, three regular season conference titles and two conference tournament crowns. Top Daug retired from the LNC baseline in 2004, but returned for a men's game in 2008 as part of the 20 year 1988 Final Four reunion.

GAME 14 RECAP: OU 73, #17 WEST VIRGINIA 49

Taylor Robertson made eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 31 points to help Oklahoma beat No. 17 West Virginia 73-49 on Wednesday night in Morgantown.

The Sooners snapped WVU's nine-game winning streak and handed the Mountaineers their first home loss of the season.

The Oklahoma defense held West Virginia to 23.7% shooting from the field, OU's lowest opponent field goal percentage this season. The Sooners held West Virginia to just 49 points; the Mountaineers had averaged 70.6 per game prior to Wednesday.

No West Virginia players scored in double figures and the Sooners held the Mountaineers to just one 3-pointer on 13 attempts. The lone WVU trey came with just a minute remaining in the fourth quarter.

Robertson extended her program record to eight straight games with at least 20 points.

Madi Williams added 15 points with eight rebounds and Mandy Simpson grabbed 11 boards for Oklahoma.

Prior to Wednesday, Oklahoma's last 20-point win away from home was in 2010 against Kentucky in the Elite Eight. The victory was also good for OU's second upset of a ranked opponent this season as the Sooners took out then-No. 25 LSU on Dec.7 in Norman.

PREVIEWING TCU

TCU comes to Norman with a 12-3 overall record and a 3-1 mark in Big 12 play, its best start through the first four games of conference play since the 2014-15 season.

In their last contest, the Horned Frogs stormed back from a 10-point deficit to take out Iowa State 77-74 on the road. Lauren Heard finished with 25 points for her third 25-point performance in four games. Kianna Ray and Jayde Woods chipped in 14 points apiece, with Woods scoring five
points in the final 39 seconds to lift the Frogs to victory.

At Iowa State, TCU had a +12 turnover margin; the Horned Frogs forced 18 ISU turnovers and scored 18 points off those ISU miscues.

Heard leads the Horned Frogs in scoring with an average 17.9 points per game and 5.9 rebounds. Her scoring average ranks fourth among Big 12 players. Ray is the only other TCU player averaging points in double figures at 12.1 per contest. Ray contributes 5.4 rebounds each game and has 26 blocks on the season.

ALL AROUND ME ARE FAMILIAR FACES

The Horned Frogs' coaching staff includes a couple of familiar faces in former Sooners Britney Brown and Abi Olajuwon.

Associate coach Brown played at OU from 2003-2007, competing in 129 games with 59 starts over four years. Brown was a member of OU teams that won a total of 100 games and captured five Big 12 Conference regular season or tournament championships.

Assistant coach Olajuwon played at OU from 2006-2010; she and Brown were teammates when Olajuwon as a freshman and Brown was a senior.Olajuwon was part of the 2009 and 2010 Women's Final Four squads and won Big 12 Championships in 2007 and 2009. As a senior in 2009-10, she started all 38 games at center, averaging 10.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Olajuwon is in her second season with the Horned Frogs.

COALE GOES FOR NO. 500

A win Sunday would make 500 for head coach Sherri Coale, who is in her 24th season at the helm for the Sooners. Coale is the winningest coach in program history at 499-207 (.648).
Coale has led the Sooners to 19 NCAA Tournament appearances in 20 years, three Final Fours and nine Sweet 16 appearances since 2000.

A four-time Big 12 Coach of the Year, Coale has also coached the Sooners to four Big 12 postseason titles and mentored 13 All-Americans, six Big 12 Players of the Year and seven Big 12 Freshmen of the Year.

14 OU players have been WNBA Draft Picks, six of them first-round selections, following their careers under Coale.

The Healdton, Okla., native was inducted into the Women's College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.

Just 72 coaches in Division I women's basketball have earned 500 or more wins in their careers. Just 33 of those are active coaches. 196 in men's and women's Division I basketball, including 60 of those active, have reached the milestone.

T-ROB TREY TRACKER

Sophomore Taylor Robertson is the NCAA's active career leader in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 47.5% (191-for-402), roughly just halfway through her second season of college basketball. Additionally, Robertson's nine made 3s at Wichita State tie for the third most in a single game in women's Division I basketball this season and are one shy of the men's 2019-20 Division I single game record of 10.

SHOOTERS SHOOT

OU has proven its prowess from long range this season with the Sooners shooting 40.0% (148-for-370) from beyond the arc to lead the Big 12 in that category and rank third nationally.

EIGHT STRAIGHT

Sophomore Taylor Roberson has scored 20+ points in each of the Sooners' last eight games to extend the OU record for the most consecutive games with 20 or more points after scoring 31 at West Virginia Wednesday.

Robertson became the outright record holder with 22 points against Iowa State on Jan. 11 with her seventh straight game with 20+, breaking a tie with teammate Ana Llanusa, who had six consecutive games above 20 in 2018-19.

Prior to Llanusa, the record was most recently held by four-time All-American Courtney Paris, who had five straight games with 20+ in 2008-09.

DUNBAR JOINS WBB ROSTER

Ashlynn Dunbar, who was previously a member of the Oklahoma volleyball team, has joined the women's basketball squad. Dunbar will be immediately eligible to play for the Sooners and will have one remaining year of eligibility for the 2020-21 season.

A standout on the volleyball court, Dunbar joins the basketball roster after a wildly successful 2019-20 campaign as an outside hitter for the Sooners and coach Lindsey Gray-Walton. Prior to her arrival in Norman in August 2019, Dunbar spent three years at San Diego State University, where she played volleyball.
