MADISON — With unseasonable heat serving as added element for runners to contend with, Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd hosted its home meet on Tuesday from the Madison Country Club.

When all the boys crossed the finish line to conclude the day, the Eagles, who entered the day as the No. 2-ranked team in Class 1A, were victorious. Backed by three runners finishing in the top five and five of its runners in the top 14 spots, LQPV/DB collected a comfortable victory with a team mark of 30.

On the girls side, the Eagles finished sixth with a score of 153.

The race was pushed backed 30 minutes and cut to 4,000 meters due to the warm temperatures.

“It was a lot warmer than usual and there was some concern,” Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd head coach John Shurb said. “We always run a 5K and we pulled a thousand off because we were looking after the health of the kids instead of the distance. I thought our kids handled it well. It got tough, there’s only so much you can do, but it’s still fun running at home.”

Mikey Kvaal was the first Eagles runner to run through the tape, as the senior finished second with a time of 13 minutes, 35.42 seconds. He was just under eight seconds off the winning pace posted by Milbank’s Nick Batchelor. Right behind Kvaal was teammate Zeke Sather, who clocked in with a time of 13:40.66. Meanwhile, LPQV/DB senior Griffin Johnson was fifth.

“I think for me, the biggest thing was that I kind of knew the roster that was going to be up front,” Kvaal said. “I kind of knew it was going to be windy, too, so the biggest thing was to not push the pace yourself and let people do the work for you.”

Elsewhere among the local competitors, Yellow Medicine East junior Bertram Munk finished in sixth-place with a time of 14:20.36. Montevideo senior Bryce Nelson was 13th as his team came home in fifth overall.

As for the girls, Murray County Central was victorious with an overall mark of 33. They were led by Morgan Gehl, who had the fastest time of 15:04.51.

Freshman Taylor Shelstad was the first to complete her race for the hosts, as she posted a time of 18:17.62. Two spots behind was Yellow Medicine East’s Kylie Knollenberg with a time of 18:28.03.

“It wasn’t our best match of the year. It’s a learning point where you can learn more from losing than winning,” said Cardinals head coach Amanda Broman. “We’re going to use that as a learning experience. We got eight games in the next two weeks and this can be a catapult for the rest of the season.”
