ORANGE, Mass. — A New Hampshire woman was killed Friday night in a rollover crash involving a tanker hauling methane gas in western Massachusetts, state police said.
Massachusetts State Police said Lois Ann Johnson, 62, of Woodstock, N.H., was killed in Friday night’s tractor-trailer crash on Route 2 in Orange, Mass.
The truck Johnson was driving was pulling a 53-foot trailer carrying multiple cylinders of pressurized natural gas, Massachusetts State Police said.
“The truck bore a hazmat placard indicating transport of methane, a primary component of natural gas,” Massachusetts State Police wrote in an email.
The truck and trailer are owned by NG Advantage while the cryogenic transport company involved is KAG Trucking Merchant Gas, Massachusetts State Police said.
Route 2 in Orange was closed in both directions between exits 13 and 15 for almost 17 hours as crews offloaded the remaining methane gas into a second tanker.
According to Massachusetts State Police, some of the cargo leaked from the truck, which prompted a hazmat response. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection also responded to the scene.
The Orange Fire Department evacuated several residences near the crash site and established a safe zone within a half-mile radius, according to officials.
The cause of the crash is being investigated by Massachusetts State Police.
