James L. “Jim” Foote, 96, lifelong Douglas County resident, died peacefully, Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at New Perspectives Senior Living in Superior.

He was born in Superior, June 29, 1924, the son of Clyde and Selma (Lammi) Foote.

Jim was a graduate of the former East High School in Superior.

A World War II veteran, Jim served his country honorably in the United States Navy. He later worked for the Soo Line Railroad, retiring after over forty years of service. He owned and operated the Foote’s Mileage gas station in East End for many years.

Jim was united in marriage to Dessa Potter, February 19, 1949, and they celebrated seventy-one years of marriage before his passing.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake Nebagamon. Jim was a member of the Poplar Wentworth Lions Club for 49 years, recently receiving the Wisconsin Lions Birch Sturm Fellowship award for dedication and commitment to Lionism.

Jim loved old cars, golf, fishing, hunting and anything that allowed him to be outdoors. If there was music, you’d find him and Dessa on the dance floor. When he retired, he spent many years enjoying their home on lake Nebagamon and winters in Sun City, Arizona.

He loved meeting people, helping others wherever he could and telling a good story. He was also a talented artist and many friends and family are lucky to own one of his watercolor paintings.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Dessa Foote, Superior, WI; daughter, Margaret “Maggie” Foote, Menomonie, WI; son, James Foote, Jupiter, FL; grandsons, Ben (Cortney) Foote, Downers Grove, IL, and Lincoln Savage-Foote, Denver, CO; great grandchildren Amelia, Aaron, Adam and Emmett Foote; and sisters, Sally Christman, and Carol Evered.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jason Foote; brothers, Clyde “Milt”, Donald, Earl, and Richard Foote; and sisters, Mary Lindblad-Marsh, and Margaret Isabelle Foote.

Pending the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, a Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held later in the summer. Military Honors will be accorded at that time by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post #435 Honor Guard.

Burial will be in Lake Nebagamon Cemetery.
