Trial To Begin In Indio Man's Murder

The trial for the accused, Nestor Gazca Cervantes of Coachella, was delayed numerous times since 2014.

INDIO, CA — A trial is scheduled to begin Tuesday for a man suspected in the shooting death of an Indio resident more than five years ago.

Nestor Gazca Cervantes of Coachella is accused of killing Christopher Luis Aguilar, 25, on July 20, 2014.

Dispatchers sent officers that night to the 83700 block of Avenue 48 in Indio and found Aguilar lying on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound. Aguilar was taken to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital where he later died.

Witnesses identified Cervantes as the alleged gunman, Indio police Sgt. Dan Marshall said at the time.

The suspect was arrested five days later when an officer spotted him driving near Avenue 54 and Shady Lane, Indio police Sgt. Dan Marshall said at the time.

Cervantes has been in custody in lieu of $2 million bail since his arrest and is currently being held at the Southwest Justice Center near Murrieta, jail records show. His trial has been repeatedly delayed since 2014.
