An Orangeburg mother is facing a third-degree assault and battery charge after a verbal spat with her 16-year-old daughter turned physical on Tuesday night, according to a police incident report.
When officers looked at the living conditions of the home, they decided that the mother’s children – ages 16 and 9 – ought to be placed in emergency protective custody, the report said.
The daughter “appeared to be very upset and had possible light bruising on her face and head,” the report said.
She told officers that the argument began when she woke up her mother to tell her a friend was outside.
She said her mother became angry and began to yell and curse at her.
The mother allegedly “pushed her, grabbed her hair and punched her several times,” according to the incident report.

A witness reported seeing the mother push the teen onto the couch and strike her in the face several times.
Eventually, after being questioned by another officer, the mother admitted the altercation she had with her daughter became physical, the report said.
The children were taken into emergency protective custody “due to the fact there was no electricity, very little food and there were no competent family members to take temporary custody,” the report states.
Officers charged the mother with third-degree assault and battery and transported her to the Orangeburg County Detention Center.
