BREAKDOWN

Seeking

Reverend Nestor Borajas -- (Latinx, mid 30s-50s) Nestor is an American citizen originally from Ocotlan, Jalisco, Mexico. He fell in love with a US missionary and their marriage brought him to Hawboro. He is the pastor of the Iglecia de Jesochristo el Todopoeroso. In addition, he serves as the Chairman of the Manly County Latino Council. Nestor is trying to find political allies to help the growing Lantinx population in Hawboro, as well as trying to urge the city to stop complying with ICE detainers. He is socially conservative on some issues, but is also eager to find a way to change the system. English is his second language, but he is fluent.

Man in the Audience -- (open ethnicity, open age) This actor will play a plant in the audience who volunteers to be a city council member as a part of an audience interactive moment in the play. He then pushes to be a candidate for mayor in the open town hall. Rebellious and anarchist, he will push the rules to the limits. He indicts the falsity of the election process and breaks the fourth wall.

Demarco Barksdale/Cameraperson – (open ethnicity, 20s) A policy student at Zebulon that works at a tech company on the weekends. He is very interested in deep fake videos and, because of his work on one of these videos, Demarco is in danger of being expelled from the college. A little rebellious and a total tech geek, Demarco is easily convinced to work secretly to destroy Mary Rose’s campaign. The Cameraperson provides live coverage of the Hawboro election, from street interviews to the open town hall, as well as behind the scenes shots.

Madison Taylor/Cameraperson – (open ethnicity, 20s) A small-town girl, Madison makes her living as a waitress at a local watering hole. In order to better her financial circumstances, she provides Eleanor with some scandalous secrets about Felton Links. This information becomes a key part of an attack ad against Felton and his campaign. The Cameraperson provides live coverage of the Hawboro election, from street interviews to the open town hall, as well as behind the scenes shots. Madison speaks with a Piedmont dialect.

The following roles have been CAST:

Eleanor Blessing [CAST] -- (Caucasian, 50s-60s) Eleanor is the chair of the Board of trustees of Zebulon College. Eleanor has lived her entire life in this community and her family has been instrumental in building Hawboro. She is an extremely wealthy and generous supporter of the Zebulon College. She is strong, opinionated, and not afraid to use her influence to get what she wants. Eleanor is the type of woman you want as your friend but definitely not as your enemy. Because he will no longer follow her lead, Eleanor has pulled her long-time support from Felton Links and has thrown her money and influence behind a new candidate: Mary Rose Crenshaw. She speaks with a Piedmont dialect.

Felton Links [CAST] -- (Caucasian, 50s – 60s) Felton Links is the long-time mayor of Hawboro and owns and runs the small local business Links BBQ, known as the best BBQ joint in Manly County. Although some folks may dismiss Felton as a good old boy, he is a clever and subtle politician. Felton excels at putting folks at ease and securing a deal with a twinkle in his eye and a smooth handshake. Felton has a few secrets of his own, including infidelity with a younger woman. Because he has finally stood up to his patron Eleanor Blessing, Felton is now fighting to keep his job as mayor and his influence in Hawboro. He speaks with a Piedmont dialect.

Bonnie Lee Abernathy [CAST] -- (African-American, 50-60s) Dr. Bonnie Lee Abernathy is the president of Zebulon College and in a few short years has turned the college around economically. Bonnie believes herself to be a visionary and is confident, strong, unyielding, and calculating when it comes to working toward that vision. Sensitive to criticism, she will do whatever it takes to get what she wants even if it means cheating the system a little. She is incredibly charismatic, saavy, and cool under pressure. Bonnie wants nothing more than for her college to have name on the national stage and she is determined to make that happen at all costs. She was instrumental in an athletics scandal that tarnished Zebulon’s reputation and is determined to make up for her mistake.

Mary Rose Crenshaw [CAST] -- (Caucasian, 40s) – A Hawboro city council member for ten years, Mary Rose has always had greater political aspirations but lacked the support to properly pursue them. With Eleanor Blessing’s financial support and backing, she can finally take a stand against Felton Links and his conservative governmental policies. She is highly opposed to Jobberclicky.com and the gig economy that it represents. She would claim to be a centrist Democrat, but has much more liberal leaning than she can reveal to her constituents or in public. Her greatest weakness is that she ultimately will not openly stand up for what she truly believes in.

Preston Lane [CAST] -- (Caucasian, 30s – 50s) Producing Artistic Director of Triad Stage and President of the Hawboro Historical Society. Preston serves as chorus and lens for the story and facilitates an open town hall. He is provocative, proudly Southern, well-educated, addicted to puns, and a Christian anarchist.

Beth Ann Bigelow [CAST] – (African American, late 20s) As the City Manager of Hawboro, Beth Ann is committed to her job and is committed to securing Hawboro a strong future in the election. She is affable, helpful, and efficient. She is a rule-follower and unafraid to enforce those rules. However, as a long-time colleague of Mayor Links, she supports his campaign and policies.

Jenessa Gardner [CAST] – (African American, 20s) The Piedmont Correspondent for North Carolina News Network (NCNN), Jenessa is poised, professional, and polished. She is the host for the show Piedmont Politics and covers the mayoral election. Although fully-committed to the job, Jenessa values her downtown and needs to recuperate after fielding the stress of the daily grind. She is grounded and realistic.

Torben Cunningham [CAST] – (Caucasian, 20s) Originally from New Jersey, Torben is an alumni of Zebulon College in Hawboro, NC. After graduation, he worked for Google and got a taste of the power and financial possibilities in the tech business. He is now the CEO of Jobberclicky.com, the fastest growing tech business in the nation. He is ambitious, driven, a little slick, a little slimy, and riding the wave of the tech bubble. He is not interested in preserving the past or in supporting projects that do not immediately benefit him or his organization.

Professor Luther Speed [CAST] -- (African American, 20s) A professor of political science at Zebulon College, who specializes in psephology. He is the author of several book and a frequent commentator on MSNBC. Although politically he falls on the left side of the spectrum, he assists Felton Link with his campaign because Luther believes that technological advancements such as Jobberclicky.com are the future.
