College volleyball: UMD sweeps through tourney

Minnesota Duluth concluded a four-match sweep Saturday at the St. Cloud Invitational with a 25-18, 25-13, 25-11 win over Lake Superior State.

Kate Berg’s 11 kills and Abby Thor’s eight blocks keyed the win for the sixth-ranked Bulldogs (7-1), who held the Lakers to an .027 hitting percentage. Emily Balts was credited with 31 set assists.

UMD has not dropped a set in six consecutive wins since losing to second-ranked Cal State-San Bernardino on Sept. 6.

  • Coe College swept St. Scholastica 25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 25-18 on Saturday in the Saints’ final match of the weekend in Waverly, Iowa.

Brooke Schermann led the Saints (7-2) with 16 kills and five blocks, while Jessica Draper totaled 28 digs.

CSS swept Friday’s opponents, edging Grinnell College 20-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12 behind Schermann’s 12 kills and Espi Austvold’s 31 set assists, and then downing host Wartburg College 19-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-22 as Morgan Lohmiller led a balanced attack with 13 kills.

  • Wisconsin-Superior rallied from two sets down to defeat St. Catherine 29-31, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-11 at the Falcon Invitational in River Falls, Wis., on Saturday.

Cami Sletta paced the Yellowjackets with 17 kills and Brylee Colligan contributed 14.

UWS dropped a pair of matches Friday night to St. Benedict and Hamline at Don Page Arena in River Falls. UWS lost 25-12, 25-9, 25-14 to St. Benedict and 26-28, 25-12, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13 to the Pipers. Cami Sletta had a team-high 13 kills against Hamline while Brylee Colligan and Gina Baertsch each chipped in 12.
