Hundreds of California schools receive waivers for in-person instruction
More than 400 schools across California have received waivers that allow for in-person instruction to begin instead of distance learning.
Within the California Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 reopening guidelines, schools are able to start in-person instruction if they are located in a county that has been off on the monitoring list for 14 days.
However, schools in counties on the monitoring lists are allowed to apply for a waiver from the local health officer to open in-person instruction.

The waiver is only available for grades TK through sixth.
After a school submits a waiver, the local health officer reviews and consults with the CDPH to decide whether or not to grant the application.
On Thursday, the CDPH released a list of 424 schools that had applied for the waiver. Of those, 414 had their waivers approved.
Schools in the state closed and moved to distance learning in mid-March amid novel coronavirus outbreak and the resulting public health restrictions. Most schools had to continue with distance learning at the start of the 2020-2021 school year.
