A 40-year-old man is dead after his car was rear-ended while he was parked on Thursday evening in western North Dakota.

It happened around 5 p.m. about two miles south of Manning.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol says a 29-year-old man from Washington state driving a Lincoln Navigator was traveling northbound on Highway 22 from Dickinson to Keene.

They say the victim was parked in his GMC Sierra 2500 in the northbound lane of a passing zone that was providing traffic control for a hazmat cleanup crew working along the roadway. That's when the Lincoln rear-ended the Sierra, pushing it off the roadway and into the ditch.

The driver of the Lincoln was transported to a Dickinson hospital for treatment to his injuries. The driver of the Sierra was pronounced dead at the scene.

The names of those involved will be released upon notification of next of kin. This crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
