DEPUTIES CONDUCTED A TRAFFIC STOP AND THE DRIVER WAS IDENTIFIED AS JACKIE ISRAEL SANDERS AND TOOK OFF ON FOOT AND WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY WITHOUT INCIDENT. HE WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE RUTHERFORD COUNTY JAIL AFTER ARRIVING COME OFFICIALS SAY HE BECAME UNRESPONSIVE. HE LATER PASSED AWAY.

Death occurred at the Rutherford County Jail

A death investigation is underway after a person died at a North Carolina jail, according to officials with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office.Officials with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said a deputy initiated a traffic stop on Highway 221 South in Forest City Friday.They said the suspect, identified as Jackie Israel Sanders, of Spartanburg, fled on foot. Sanders was later taken into custody without incident.When Sanders arrived at the Rutherford County Jail, officials said Sanders became unresponsive. Officials said first aid was administered until the Rutherfordton Fire Department and Rutherford County EMS arrived. They said Sanders passed away at the jail.The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the death.An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
