A Des Allemands man died early Friday morning after crashing a stolen car on Louisiana 21 near Lavinghouse Road in St. Tammany Parish, according to State Police.

State troopers said Lionel Harris Jr., 42, was driving the stolen vehicle at about 5 a.m. northbound at a high rate of speed when the road curved to the right and he drove into a ditch on the left side of the highway.

State police said they suspect Harris was impaired at the time of the crash, and blood samples were taken for analysis.

Due to the damage to the car, it is unknown whether he was wearing a seat belt.

Tammy Cowart, 44, of Savier Miss. was a front-seat passenger in the car and was taken to an area hospital to be treated for moderate injuries.

Cowart was arrested for illegal possession of stolen things and the crash is still under investigation by state police.
