How to Choose a Wedding Dress Based on Your Zodiac Sun Sign

It's all in the stars.

When it comes to selecting your wedding dress, there are a lot of different components to consider, such as the time of the year, your venue, and, of course, your personal style. What's more, while you’re deciding between a ball gown and a sheath silhouette, there’s one other aspect to keep in mind that might help you narrow down the choices and say yes to the dress: your sun sign.

“Your sun sign represents your core personality, but in astrology, the sun also represents life, growth, and abundance, all things brides want to invoke on their wedding day,” says writer and astrology expert Sophie Saint Thomas. “The sun asks you to wear whatever will make you happiest.” And who wouldn't want to be the happiest version of themselves on their wedding day?

However, before selecting a gown based on your zodiac, it is important to note that astrologist Natasha Weber advises using your rising sign as an indicator if you don't resonate with your sun sign. “In astrology, your rising sign dictates your appearance,” Weber tells Brides. “That way, you’ll still express an authentic piece of your astrological puzzle.”

Fire: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius

Fire signs are well known for bringing the heat and drawing the light, which is especially true when it comes to selecting a wedding dress design. “Fire signs are more likely to take calculated fashion risks—going all out to impress,” Weber explains.

Aries

“As the first sign of the zodiac, Aries simply have to be show-stoppers,” says Saint Thomas. (Think daring dresses with some shock value, such as a sultry, strapless mermaid.) “Thigh-high leg splits and plunging necklines get the cosmic go-ahead for this racy sign,” she adds.

Leo

More is more and bigger is better for the mighty lioness, and Leos—ruled by the sun—are always looking to make an entrance. Saint Thomas says a ball gown with a long train is a style every Leo must try on, with Weber adding that Leos should also consider pops of color, either with their gown or as an accessory, to add some powerful pizzaz.

Sagittarius

“Sporty Sagittarius loves a dress they can move about freely in, so tight, suffocating bodices are out,” explains Weber. In fact, Sagittarians love movement so much that Saint Thomas definitely recommends leaning into styles that will play up the bride’s energy. “Opt for bell sleeves, long trains, chandelier earrings, and hair worn down," she suggests. You might also want to consider flats or sneakers, instead of teetering heels, so you can stay on the dance floor all night long.

Earth: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn

Taurus, Virgos, and Capricorns are all about classic elegance and style, explains Weber. “Earth signs sparkle brightest playing it safe,” she also notes, so look for styles that scream sophistication and class.

Taurus

“Avoiding a fashion faux pas is vital for conservative bulls,” Weber says. “Instead, they exude subtle beauty in quality fabrics that feel amazing and drape exquisitely on the body.” Saint Thomas also shares that a Taurus will probably feel happier skipping a corset and, instead, selecting a dress “that's chic, comfy, and sexy, such as a sheath gown with floral lace.”

Virgo

“A dress that’s modest, demure, and understated suits Virgo to a T,” explains Weber. Look for plain A-line skirts, sharp angles, and modern silhouettes paired with expertly cut jewelry. And no matter what style a Virgo chooses, Saint Thomas says a highly skilled tailor is essential to satisfy Virgo's mathematic mind and love of precision.

Capricorn

The sophisticated, traditional Capricorn bride is “eternally elegant,” says Weber, so no need for oversized skirts or puffy sleeves—this bride will probably want to keep things purely classic. “Classic and conservative styling keeps Capricorn feeling good,” astrologer Shereen Campbell tells Brides. That said, Saint Thomas does note that Capricorns have “a secret devilish side,” so pick out some sexy bridal lingerie to match your understated style.

Air: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius

“Cerebral air signs are likely to think up something innovative, like a veil that turns into a shawl or an overskirt that reveals a mini dress during the first dance,” says Weber. Whatever style they choose, air signs want to make a unique impression.

Gemini

“Geminis are flirty air signs that love variety,” notes Saint Thomas, which is why she suggests that they should budget for both a ceremony and reception dress. Weber also recommends something playful, like a '60s-inspired mini dress, and urges Geminis to take their time and trust the process since they “might change their mind a few times before feeling on their favorite.”

Libra

Since Libra is ruled by Venus, the goddess of romance, Saint Thomas says they’ll want to lean into their beauty-loving ways. “Librans set trends, they don’t follow them,” explains Weber. This means whatever style makes you feel one-of-a-kind and beautiful is definitely the way to go.

Aquarius

“Aquarius shines brightest when she lets her inner rebel loose on her wedding day,” notes Weber. “A striking point of difference sets this bride aside from the rest.” As the most eccentric sign of the zodiac, both experts agree Aquarians are most likely to break from the traditional bridal white. Whether that’s a metallic dress, such as gold or pink (the color of love), don’t be surprised if you find yourself leaning away from more muted tones.

Water: Pisces, Cancer, and Scorpio

When it comes to being sentimental on their wedding day, no one feels quite as much as a water sign, says Weber. “Expect emotional water sign’s wedding dress to scream romance, Mills & Boon style,” she explains.

Pisces

“True to her aquatic, ethereal beauty, the Pisces bride looks like a dream come true in a mermaid-style wedding dress,” says Weber. Additionally, since Pisces adore water, Saint Thomas suggests brides lean into that element. “Brides already need something blue, and in color magick, blue represents peace and tranquility,” she explains. “Wear a baby blue gown or blue shoes with traditional white.”

Cancer

“Romantic crabs love flounces, ruffles, and anything pretty,” notes Weber, so consider a Cinderella ball gown paired with a sweetheart neckline. Saint Thomas also notes that Cancers feel most beautiful when surrounded by loved ones, so consider integrating a family heirloom—such as a brooch or bracelet—into your wedding day style.

Scorpio

“Scorpios love mystery, so Scorpio brides should absolutely wear a veil on their wedding day to heighten the drama,” says Saint Thomas. Weber also adds that a curve-hugging fit-and-flare gown “that screams drama” is made for a Scorpio queen. As for the color, both experts agree that if anyone wears a black gown on their wedding day, it’s a Scorpio.
