Cheese Curds, 3/16: Packers still have work to do at cornerback

Herb Waters’ return is nice, but Brian Gutekunst still needs to add talent at the position.

The Green Bay Packers have added a receiving weapon to their offense and signed a potential difference-maker for the front seven in the opening days of free agency. However, the trade of Damarious Randall to the Browns exacerbated the concerns over the cornerback position, and the team has yet to address that spot by bringing in any players from outside the organization.

The team did make one roster move at the position on Thursday, but it was to bring back a player from the 2017 roster who had some medical concerns. Meanwhile, the scouting department is back at it looking at draft prospects, attending the Pro Day of an FCS cornerback who shows significant promise.

That’s not to say the team isn’t trying to land a free agent corner. The Packers have reportedly been in the market for a few of the top options, including Trumaine Johnson and Bashaud Breeland, who signed with the Jets and Panthers respectively, as well as Rashaan Melvin, who remains unsigned. However, Melvin is being wooed by other teams as well, and the Packers could miss out on him as well.

Here is today’s Packers news to get you going for the day.
