Bahraini Rights Group Voices Concern over New Wave of Political Arrests

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) announced that the Manama regime has made 39 arrests over the past two weeks on political grounds, expressing sorrow that five of them are children.

In a report posted on its twitter account, the BCHR said 39 people, including 5 children, have been arrested by the Bahraini security forces from September 14 to 20, according to the Arabic-language Al-Alam TV Network.

The human right group further called on the Al Khalifa regime to stop the “cruel” arrests, particularly children, and release all political prisoners.

In its report earlier last month, the BCHR announced that the number of political arrests in the Persian Gulf country has hit record high in March.

In March 2015, Bahrain witnessed 272 arrests on political grounds, which was the highest number in the 12-month period, the report said.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations.

Bahraini opposition groups, however, have unanimously called for the release of all the political dissidents who have been imprisoned, stressing that only a political solution, and not the use of force, would end the political crisis in the Persian Gulf state.
