The burden of malaria and the bid to defeat it

Malaria is an ancient scourge which affects millions of people each year. About half a million people die from the parasitic disease every year - most of them children under five years of age. Despite huge progress in fighting malaria over the past decade and a half, drug resistance and the number of cases have started to alarmingly creep up. What are we spending on the fight, what would it cost to do more, what are we achieving and what we stand to gain if malaria is defeated?
