Tudors Performance Honda 440EX kit Part 2

Off-Road.com Product Test

We have now had a couple months to break-in, dyno, and ride our new Tudor's 440EX. See Project 440EX, #4K, taking the whole shot in our lead photo.

First our Dyno results. 37HP. That is significantly more than any piped and jetted Suzuki Z400 and even slightly more than where most stock Raptors come in at. (The 440EX is still slower in reverse though. <grin>). You must also remember that we did not ask Tudor's to build the wildest 440EX with the most peak HP. We asked for a good reliable mid range motor. What the 37 hp doesn't tell you is about the torque curve. This motor is producing impressive torque right from the very bottom all the way through to the top end. We couldn't be happier with how this package performed on the Dyno. Thanks to the R&D team at Edelbrock for the use of their Dyno.

So how is it all working?

Starting has been easier. (With one exception when our battery did not have enough juice to fire it.). We believe the improved starting is mostly due to the Tudor';s ignition box replacing the older XR250 module we had been running. We had some concern over the automatic decompression being removed as part of the Hotcams kit but we have found that it NOT an issue.

Yes, that is snow in the background
We have always liked the Edelbrock Quicksilver carb and with the 440 modifications it has worked flawlessly. We have been all over three states in the last couple months and we love how it adjusts to altitude and eliminates the need for continuous jet changes. The carb provides smooth and consistent power to the 440ex.

No snow, just plenty of mud

The new Bills 400EX pipe has worked good. It is loud but not too loud. (Although I am sure it won't pass the Oregon dunes 92db sound limit.) The only thing that was somewhat of a nuisance is that the springs on the pipe were vibrating against the header at certain RPM's. It took some tweaking of the springs to get that to go away.
On the track the 440EX has worked flawlessly. We have put it through some brutal conditions with some desert runs followed by several WORCs races where we found lots of deep sticky MUD. Even with the large 22" tires and a 440EX and rider covered with at least 60 lbs of mud, the motor had plenty of torque to pull it through all of the conditions we encountered.
Summary Our Tudor's 440EX has lived up to all of it's expectations. While the 400EX may not be the newest kid on the block, it doesn't take that much to make it run with the newer generation 400's. I have see some really good deals on used 400EX's and believe it should be considered an option to purchasing a new Z400/KFX 400. Whether your just trail riding with your buddies or doing some local racing, we believe you would be happy with this Midrange Power kit.
