Mount Vernon jumps on Salem early to win amateur baseball opener

Mount Vernon capitalized on five Salem errors to score a 12-1 win in amateur baseball action Friday.

MOUNT VERNON -- Mount Vernon capitalized on five Salem errors to score a 12-1 win in amateur baseball action Friday.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 7-0 lead through two innings, scoring three runs on four hit batters and three walks in the first. In the second, clubbed four singles -- RBIs coming from Bradley Dean, Briggs Havlik and Deric Denning -- with two outs to score four runs.

Denning finished the day 2-for-2 with four RBIs, while Brady Albrecht went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Eric Giblin drove in two runs. Dean, Havlik and Spencer Neugebauer all had two hits.

Like Tiesler went four innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and three walks, while striking out seven to earn the win for Mount Vernon (1-0).

Trevor Wilkinson drove in the lone run for Salem (0-1) in the fourth, while Cory Struck, Isaac Anderson and Kyle Tuschen tossed two innings apiece, allowing nine earned runs on 12 hits and struck out six.
