When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit Dallas, dozens of local organizations created pop-up food pantries for North Texans in need. Operation Kindness, one of our region’s largest no-kill shelters, jumped in to make sure pets were cared for, too. The nonprofit’s Pet Food Pantry provides food, cat litter, toys, and other supplies to pet owners who are struggling financially.

Operation Kindness also distributes dog and cat food to 11 smaller animal rescue groups in North Texas. In April, a partnership with Meals on Wheels was established so that elderly, disabled, or medically vulnerable pet owners can avoid pet stores during the pandemic.

In June, the Pantry distributed 6,502 pounds of dry food, 23,782 ounces of canned food, and 714 pounds of litter. This month, the demand at the Pet Food Pantry is higher than ever. Unfortunately, donations have decreased by 50 percent. Operation Kindness needs the community’s help to carry on.

“There are families and pets in need, and we can help them,” said Natalie Buxton, the animal shelter’s director of marketing and communications. “The difference we make in the lives of dogs and cats is a rewarding experience, and we’re continuously thankful to every supporter who [helps] further our mission.”

Operation Kindness needs unopened cat or dog food, cat litter, and toys. Have something to donate? Stop by the nonprofit from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 201 Earhart Drive and drop off your items at the front door. You can also donate directly to Operation Kindness via Amazon.
