Fargo semi driver may face charges after South Dakota fatal crash

HERREID, S.D. — An 82-year-old Mound City man has been identified after he died following a crash involving a semi-truck Tuesday, July 2, south of Herreid on the northern border of the state.

Ernest Fjeldheim died July 4 at a Bismarck hospital, the South Dakota Highway Patrol said. Fjeldheim was driving a 2019 Buick LaCrosse southbound on Highway 83 when he collided with a northbound 2015 Freightliner Cascadia driven by Asmerom Gebreselassie, 36, of Fargo.

The Highway Patrol said the semi was passing a vehicle when the crash occurred. Charges are pending against Gebreselassie, the patrol said. Gebreselassie was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Fjeldheim was not wearing a seat belt.
