"A lot of the times we'll get basil in, picked that morning and it will be on product that evening," said Joe Nunner, owner of Joe's Pizza Napoli.

He owns Joe's Pizza Nap in Milford and is looking for the freshest local ingredients.

"Either be in sauces or pistachio pesto or pizza so it's been a great partnership," said Nunner.

And all of the basil he gets for free.

Everything you see in this garden would have been thrown away by local nurseries.

Instead, it was donated to the valley view rescue garden.

"They basically give us the plants that they are going to be throwing away or setting up for compost so I basically take those plants and we put them in the ground with the help of volunteers, and we take the produce and we give them to those in need," said Greg Elsmere, volunteer organizer of Valley View Rescue Garden.

They grow everything from peppers to tomatoes, herbs to zucchinis.

A number of nonprofits reap the benefits and La Soupe is one. They pack up their truck every week with different vegetables from the garden and makes soups and meals to provide for our neighbors in need.

"Community centers, homeless shelters, schools, we're doing a lot of work with cps right now especially with COVID-19 and all the different scheduling going on, we're just trying to help in any way we can," said Katy Nardolillo, partner relations manager at La Soupe.

So why give it to a private business like Nunner's?

Because the money he would have spent on basil this year he pays instead to help fund the garden.

Many regular volunteer groups have pulled out due to their own struggles with the pandemic.
