Man dies when hay bale tumbles off trailer in front of motorcycle

PIERZ, Minn. — A motorcyclist was killed Thursday, Aug. 15, in central Minnesota when a hay bale fell off the trailer in front of him, causing him to crash his motorcycle, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Myles McGrath, 64, of Pierz, was driving his Can-Am Spyder motorcycle behind a 2003 Dodge Ram truck towing a trailer loaded with hay south on Minnesota 25 near 273rd Street in Morrison County, about 12 miles north of Pierz.

Three hay bales fell off the trailer. McGrath hit one of the bales and then crashed in the median ditch. He was wearing a helmet, the State Patrol reported.

Authorities were called to the scene about 5:30 p.m. Thursday. McGrath was taken to North Memorial Medical Center, in Robbinsdale, where he died.

The driver of the truck, Roger Lanners, 57, of Royalton, was uninjured. Pierz is about 30 miles south of Brainerd.
