It involves a 21-day ‘cleanse’ ditching gluten, dairy, eggs, sugar and alcohol and having a liquid breakfast and dinner.

Prue said: “I think the Clean Gut thing is ridiculous.

“It’s dangerous to worry about excess stuff too much because if you think excessively about food it becomes a kind of fear.

“People become neurotic about what they like to eat and I think the most essential thing is balance - not too much of anything.”

The New York cardiologist’s programme has been championed by Shallow Hal actress Gwyneth, 45, on her controversial goop blog.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin’s ex-wife has been criticised for promoting expensive lifestyle products and unproven so-called health tips on the website.

They include vaginal steaming and a blend of flower oils claimed to beat depression.

In 2016 supermodel Naomi, 48, told how she was reading about the diet, adding: “I’m a real believer about keeping your colon clean.”

Hollywood star Demi, 55, told her Twitter followers in 2010 she was following the regime, insisting: “There is no starving involved. It is all about nourishing the body.”

The 21-day scheme can set people back at least £350.

Dr Junger claims it is meant to “neutralise and eliminate” toxins and help break bad habits, identify foods causing irritations and encourage healthy long-term eating.

But Prue backed a NHS-backed balanced diet including occasionally devouring the puddings featured on the Channel 4 show and even backed veganism.

Speaking at the launch of her new cook book Prue, she said: “Anything will kill you if you have too much of it. Even orange juice or super foods.

“You have to have a proper balance and then enjoy it and be relaxed about it.

“Have a cake every now and again.”

She added: “I don’t think vegan is a fad. I think vegan will stay with us. It’s a growing trend.”
