So sunny and blue-skied was Paris yesterday that it felt like spring. What better moment for Dior to unveil its spring couture collection? Over the next few days the wealthiest Dior customers will order their chosen looks to be made to their measurements so that they can be delivered in a few weeks’ time, ready for the new season.

Understandably the collection went big on the kind of diaphanousness that doesn’t tend to pass muster in January, to wit, a series of floor-sweeper dresses in a shade the house called — in suitably haute fashion — champagne.

What embellishment there was — pearl embroidery, crystal droplets, tulle ruffles — was offset by the minimalist lines and restrained palette. But these were showstoppers all the same.
