John Lewis & Partners has reported record sales during the week of the “Black Friday” sales extravaganza, despite hiccups with its website.

It said that total sales last week were up 7.7 per cent on the same week last year, “making it the biggest sales week in our history”. Offer items such as mobile phones, tablets, Google mini smart speakers and Apple AirPods had helped to draw in shoppers in its stores and online, it said.

Fashion sales were up 13.1 per cent, while perfumes and beauty performed well, with demand for Creed Aventus Eau de Parfum and Clarins Skincare gift sets. It also sold healthy numbers of the John Lewis & Partners beauty advent calender (reduced from £165 to £115.50 for Black Friday), as
