Robert Gordon, partner at South Florida law firm Gordon & Doner, is expressing his concern over the thousands of women who were exposed to the alleged cancer risks linked to power morcellation following Johnson & Johnson's decision to voluntarily withdraw their surgical devices from the market.

“Studies published in 2012 revealed that uterine morcellation could cause the spread of cancerous cells during minimally invasive surgeries for hysterectomy or uterine fibroid removal. Since then, thousands of women who had not been diagnosed with cancer underwent this procedure and were not made aware of the risks. Our firm encourages women who have undergone power morcellation to contact us,” said Gordon.

According to an article published in Reuters on July 30, Johnson & Johnson will be asking doctors and other medical customers to return the power morcellators they purchased from the company. The morcellators are used to cut up uterine growths, also known as fibroids, so that they can be removed easily using a non-invasive procedure. However, the masses being removed may be malignant. If undetected during the morcellation process, the cancerous cells could spread and result in critical patient outcomes.

On April 17, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a news release that discouraged the use of laparoscopic power morcellation for the removal of the uterus or uterine fibroids as the procedure presents a risk of spreading undetected cancerous tissue. According to the FDA, one in 350 women who are undergoing a hysterectomy or myomectomy have not been diagnosed with uterine sarcoma. If power morcellation is performed, there is a risk that the procedure will spread the cancerous tissue in the abdomen and pelvis.

The class action lawyers at Gordon & Doner urge women who have undergone power morcellation and have suffered injury or illness following this procedure to contact the firm at 1-855-722-2552.
